Oak Framing.
Each Frame is jointed from fresh sawn ( green ) Oak. The frame will generally
be a post and beam structure, i.e. a series of posts, beams, studs and braces
supporting a trussed roof system. Floor structures are an integral part of
each frame where applicable using Oak chamber beams and Oak joists.
Roof structures would traditionally comprise of Oak trusses,
purlins and rafters, however modern practices sometimes
lend themselves to exposing only the trusses and purlins
with the common rafters being from treated softwood and
covered with plasterboard or similar as a means to reducing
the overall build cost slightly.
Each joint will be traditionally drawpegged using seasoned
Oak pegs supplied with the frame. As the peg absorbs moisture
from the beams, it expands and so tightens in within the
joint.
Frames which require glazing will be machined from kiln
dried or air dried Oak so as to avoid distortion and shrinkage
due to further seasoning. The glazing frames are usually
fitted between the main green supporting posts incorporating
an expanding weatherproof seal.

A Message from R.T.C.
The Oak used in all of our frames is sourced from sustainably
managed woodlands, many from England and Wales. Timber
is a natural product which will react to changes in atmospheric
conditions. When an order is dispatched, it will have
been recently sawn or machined. With the passage of time
and variations in the weather, we cannot guarantee that
the timber will not move or crack a little – in
fact an Oak frame is very likely to do just that. These
subtle variations and the mellowing of colour enhance
the natural appearance of the product and do not detract
from its quality, strength or performance.
To include Oak immediately adds warmth and character to
your home or garden. Through the years it just gets better – that’s
the real beauty of Oak.
